                                       Welcome :)

Welcome to my blog. I was looking at the books in a library and I came upon a book on Anorexia and Bulimia, which got me thinking about why teens try to lose weight using these two methods. So I’m going to be keeping a blog and I will post three different articles that talk about the ideas that drive a teen’s obsession with losing weight, and why they turn to Anorexia and Bulimia. I will be researching the causes of Anorexia and Bulimia. One possible cause is that teens want to be just like the models or celebrities that they see on T.V. Another is, if bullying causes the idea that “I’m fat, I need to lose weight so I can be pretty” or if playing sports and the pressure to "be fit" causes most teens to turn to Anorexia and /or Bulimia. I believe that no one should be judged by their weight or size, but I want to see what causes most teens to turn to the extremes and develop these life or death diseases.
How do sports encourage eating disorders in athletes?

In this article on sports in anorexia and bulimia they talk about how athletes and eating disorders connect. Their purpose is to inform readers about how sports can cause anorexia and bulimia and also to tell them how to help those that develop this and more. The main idea is that athletes are at greater risks for developing eating disorders and that they can be fatal if they are not taken care of immediately. This article doesn’t contain any conflicting evidence but it does contain some bias which leans towards the opinion that you should be careful because eating disorders in athletes are dangerous. This source is a reliable source because it is a site that is used by lots of people and it is well known to be reliable, it also passes the common sense test. Another reason is that it refers to a college that specializes in sports medicine and it gives other additional information or sites that have more information to add to this. This source contains useful information that can help but this source may not be that reliable, even though it contains good information. Because it is on about.com and its writers can be fake or a random person from ages ranging from young to old. Anyone can post stuff on about.com which is another reason that this article may not be that reliable.

Media Influence is huge on everyday life of young adults and teens, this article talks about its influence in life and they persuade you with facts and statistics and a poem that tells you about the beginning of it and how it can end. There purpose is to show statistics and facts that document how obsessed we are with the pursuit of thinness. The main idea is to persuade readers to refrain from trying to look like the people that are on T.V. because they are a bad influence and you should not follow them. This article doesn’t have any conflicting evidence, but it is bias towards not trying to look like the media stars. They tell you about where they get their stats/facts. They show you stats on what dieting, your idea of you body, models from before to now, what television and movies do and last they have written advice on how to prevent someone from letting media influence their lives. In their section on dieting they show what the media does to both men and women through dieting. For your body image they explain about self-esteem and more statistics and facts. When they talk about the models they show you the progress of this disease that slowly has started to take a larger toll on models than before. They talk about T.V. and movies influence on people that later become obsessed with being like a model or being thin. The help is what they are trying to persuade readers to follow because after all of the facts and statistics of what the media does their help is there. This source is accurate
The article Bullying and Eating Disorders purpose is to inform reader that bullying can affect not only the victim but also the bully. They believe that you need help whether you are the bully or the victim. The article has been written by the British charity beat, they wrote this article after interviewing 600 adolescents that have suffered through anorexia and bulimia. The survey that they had them take showed that 91% of them had been bullied and about 46% said that bullying had contributed to there eating disorder. This data helps provide the facts that make this article reliable. Though there is no conflicting evidence in this article they say that bullies can develop disorders due to their bullying and that it is not only the victim that develops the disorders. There is no bias or slant in this article. They talk about other things that cause victims of bullying to develop eating disorders such as low self esteem, or being called fat and also if there are family issues and the on top of that there is bullying. Overall this is a reliable article, and it has information that helps readers to understand where bullying stands in teens developing eating disorders due to it.
Conclusion

My viewpoint on this topic is that Anorexia and Bulimia are life threatning diseases that are everywhere from the start of your day. It may be due to bullying which can affect not only you but the person that is bullying you. Then if you stay after school and you play a sport you may be pressured to stay fit or be fit, making you feel like you need to loose a lot of weight. Then when you get home and turn on the T.V. you are bombarded with commertials and shows that have celebritys that are thinnsperation to all kids and adults. No wonder so many teens have been lost to Anorexia and Bulimia. From this research I have learned so much about these two eating disorders and  now I want to take a stand and help prevent it from taking its toll on a new generation of teens.
